Home Ductwork Install and Replace

Ductwork installation and replacement in Addison, TX that finally moves the air where it belongs

Hot upstairs bedrooms, whistling registers and a system that never seems to keep up are often duct problems wearing an equipment disguise. We measure the ducts first, then rebuild what is holding the system back.

  • Static pressure measured before design
  • Joints sealed with mastic or listed tape
  • Runs insulated where they leave conditioned space

Rooms that stay hot or cold no matter what the thermostat says? Call to schedule a duct evaluation with measured airflow readings.

The hidden system that decides how comfortable each room feels

A furnace, air conditioner or heat pump only creates heated or cooled air. The ductwork decides where that air ends up. When supply runs are undersized, crushed or leaking, the equipment can be working perfectly while a back bedroom barely feels a breeze. Many homeowners replace equipment hoping to fix an uneven house, only to find the same rooms still uncomfortable afterward, because the cause was never in the cabinet.

Static pressure is the measurement we rely on most. It works a little like blood pressure for the air system. Every blower is designed to move a certain volume of air against a certain amount of resistance. Undersized returns, dirty coils, restrictive filters and long twisting duct runs all add resistance. When total pressure climbs past what the blower was designed for, airflow drops, the motor works harder and heating and cooling capacity falls off.

If a room is uncomfortable after an equipment upgrade, the ducts were probably the problem all along.

Return air is the half of the system people rarely think about. A house needs a clear path for air to come back to the equipment. Closed bedroom doors with no return or transfer path can starve the blower and pressurize those rooms. Older homes sometimes use the cavity between floor joists as a return, which tends to leak and pull air from places it should not. Adding or enlarging returns is frequently the single most effective duct improvement we make.

Leakage matters most where ducts pass through attics, crawl spaces and garages. Air that escapes there is paid for and lost, and leaky return ducts can pull in dusty, humid or fumy air from those spaces. We seal joints and seams with mastic or tape listed for duct use rather than the cloth duct tape that dries out and lets go. Runs outside the conditioned space receive insulation so the air arrives closer to the temperature it left at.

Flexible duct deserves special care. It performs well when it is pulled tight, supported at proper intervals and routed with gentle bends. Sagging, kinked or excessively long flex runs choke airflow badly. In replacement projects we often find flex that was installed quickly years ago and has since slumped between rafters or been flattened during other work.

Design follows measurement. For new systems and substantial replacements, duct sizing is based on the airflow each room needs, which comes from a room by room load calculation. That keeps new ductwork matched to equipment such as a new system from our Central Air Installation service, instead of copying the dimensions of whatever was there before.

One caution for older homes: some early ductwork and duct wrap contained asbestos. If we find suspect material, work in that area stops until it has been evaluated and, if needed, handled by a licensed abatement contractor. Every other part of the project is quoted in writing, approved before work begins and backed by our written workmanship warranty.

Clues that point to ductwork rather than equipment

These symptoms often show up together. A duct evaluation helps separate airflow problems from equipment faults.

Rooms that never match the thermostat

Rooms far from the equipment or above garages often suffer from weak supply airflow.

Whistling grilles or roaring returns

Noise at registers usually means air is being forced through openings that are too small.

Dust returning quickly after cleaning

Leaky return ducts can draw dust and debris from attics, walls and crawl spaces.

High bills with average usage

Conditioned air escaping into unconditioned spaces is energy you pay for and never feel.

Crushed, disconnected or sagging runs

Damage from storage, pests or other trades can quietly cut airflow to entire rooms.

Equipment running long without catching up

Excess static pressure reduces how much heating or cooling actually reaches the house.

How a duct project comes together

Each step builds on measurements, so the final design addresses the specific restrictions in your home.

  1. Airflow and pressure testing

Total external static pressure is measured and supply and return sections are checked for restriction.

  2. Visual inspection of accessible runs

Attic, basement and crawl space ducts are inspected for leaks, damage, sagging and missing insulation.

  3. Room load and sizing plan

Airflow targets for each room guide the size and routing of new or modified runs.

  4. Written scope and approval

The proposal lists which runs are replaced, added, resized or sealed, with a flat price.

  5. Installation and sealing

Ducts are built or replaced, supported correctly, sealed at every joint and insulated where required.

  6. Verification readings

Static pressure is measured again and register airflow is checked so the improvement is documented.

What shapes a ductwork project

Duct projects vary more than most HVAC work because every home is framed and finished differently.

Primary variables in ductwork installation and replacement
AccessOpen basements and roomy attics are far simpler than tight crawl spaces or finished ceilings.
Scope of changeSealing and repairs cost less than resizing trunks or running entirely new supply lines.
Return air additionsNew returns may require cutting into walls or floors and finishing the openings.
Insulation requirementsRuns in attics, garages and crawl spaces need insulation suited to that location.
Suspect older materialsMaterial that may contain asbestos must be evaluated before work continues in that area.

Ductwork questions from Addison, TX homeowners

Yes. Undersized or leaky supply runs, missing returns on upper floors and long duct routes are some of the most common reasons one floor stays warmer or cooler than another.

Not automatically. We measure static pressure and inspect the existing ducts first. Some systems need only sealing and a larger return, while others need significant resizing to support the new equipment.

Standard cloth duct tape tends to dry out and fail over time. Joints should be sealed with mastic or with tape specifically listed for duct sealing.

Static pressure is the resistance the blower has to push against. When it is too high, airflow drops, comfort suffers and the blower motor works harder than it was designed to.

It depends on access. Work in open basements and attics causes little disruption, while projects that require opening finished walls or ceilings involve more planning, which we explain in the proposal.

What changed after the duct work

Our upstairs used to be miserable every summer. They added a return and replaced two crushed runs, and now the whole house feels even.

They measured before and after and showed me the numbers. The registers in the addition finally blow real air.
